چکیده

We present HST (WFPC2 and FOC) images and UV GHRS spectra plus ground-based optical spectra of four Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs) that have Seyfert 2 nuclei (Mrk 477, NGC 7130, NGC 5135 and IC 3639). The data provide direct evidence of the existence of a central nuclear starburst that dominates the UV and optical light and are dusty and compact. The bolometric luminosity (∼ 1010 L⊙) of these starbursts is similar to the estimated bolometric luminosities of their obscured Seyfert 1 nuclei, and thus they contribute in the same amount to the overall energetics of these galaxies. An extended work based on ground-based optical spectra of the 20 brightest nuclei known indicate that at least 40% of the Seyfert 2 galaxies harbor a nuclear starburst. The eight Seyfert 2 nuclei that harbor a starburst are strong IR emitters. This suggests that nuclear starbursts can make a significant contribution or even dominate the UV and optical light of LIRGs.

The Evidence for Massive Star Formation in Early-Type Spiral Galaxies

A recent analysis of the IRAS database indicates that the massive star formation rates in early-type (Sa-Sab) spirals are comparable to the massive star formation rates in late-type spirals. Hα imaging of some of the infrared luminous early-type spirals reveals two types of galaxies. One type shows clear signs of interaction, whereas the other type appears to host a nuclear starburst. The occur...

The Seyfert-starburst Connection in X-rays. Ii. Results and Implications

We present the results of X-ray imaging and spectroscopic analysis of a sample of Seyfert 2 galaxies that contain starbursts, based on their optical and UV characteristics. These composite galaxies exhibit extended, soft, thermal X-ray emission, which we attribute to their starburst components. Comparing their X-ray and far-infrared properties with ordinary Seyfert and starburst galaxies, we id...

The Role of Starbursts in the Formation of Galaxies & Active Galactic Nuclei

Starbursts are episodes of intense star-formation in the central regions of galaxies, and are the sites of roughly 25% of the high-mass star-formation in the local universe. In this contribution I review the role starbursts play in the formation and evolution of galaxies, the intergalactic medium, and active galactic nuclei. First, I point out the empirical similarities between local starbursts...

The Starburst-agn Connection: Integral Field Spectroscopy of Merging and Seyfert 2 Galaxies

Infrared bright galactic nuclei may be powered by accretion of matter onto a black hole, a burst of new star formation, or both of these processes. To gain insight into such processes we have used integral field spectroscopy to observe a sample of galaxies with identified AGN or nuclear starbursts. We confirm the presence of a starburst in the nuclear regions of the galaxies IC 3639, MRK 477, N...

Seyfert Galaxies with Circumnuclear/nuclear Starbursts

In this paper, we present our preliminary results on Seyfert galaxies with circumnuclear/nuclear starburst(SB) activity. We have searched the recent available literature and found 76 active galaxies with clear evidence of nuclear SB activity, among which 16 are Seyfert 1s, 51 Seyfert 2s, and 9 LINERs. After studying the 51 Seyfert 2s, we find that those Seyfert 2s with hidden Seyfert 1 nuclei, ...
